In 1987, a Senate bill was passed directing Âé¶¹AVto develop a plan for a regional trail system, including a specific alignment for the Bay Trail; a planned 500-mile walking and cycling path around the entire San Francisco Bay. Now the Bay Trail is a joint project between Âé¶¹AVand the Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC).

The now has 355 spectacular miles of walking and bicycling paths encircling the Bay for Bay Area residents and visitors to enjoy. The trail connects communities to parks, open spaces, schools, transit and to each other, and also provides a great alternative commute corridor.

How Does a 500 Mile Trail Get Built?

One mile at a time with extraordinary coordination across our region.

The Bay Trail Project oversees cooperation among the following: shoreline property owners; hundreds of local, regional, state and federal agencies with jurisdiction over the trail alignment; numerous land trusts that operate in the region; and countless environmental and recreational organizations whose members care deeply about the Bay.

Please note: Effective March 17, 2025, the ABAG-MTC staffing agreement for the Bay Trail nonprofit, including the Board of Directors and Steering Committee, is no longer active per Âé¶¹AVExecutive Resolution 3-2025 and the Notice of Termination.
